Background
Air conditioning and chiller systems are among the largest electricity users on an industrial site, especially in food and beverage production where temperatures must be carefully controlled. Over time, condenser coils lose heat transfer efficiency, which forces compressors to work harder and increases energy consumption. At Malee, two Carrier split-type air conditioners, each with a capacity of 320,000 BTU, have been in service for 10 years.
The solution: THERMAL-XR®
THERMAL-XR® is a graphene-enhanced coating from Graphene Manufacturing Group (GMG), designed to deliver superior heat transfer and protection for heat exchanger coils. The coating was spray-applied to the condenser coils of both units, with no change to the equipment itself.
Results
Energy use was compared before and after coating:
- Electricity usage: 1,346 kWh/day before coating vs 1,036 kWh/day after
- Electricity cost: 161,558 THB/month before coating vs 124,432 THB/month after
- Carbon emissions: 219 tons CO2/year before coating vs 169 tons CO2/year after
- Annual saving: 445,513 THB per year
- ROI: < 1 year
These results equal an energy saving of 22.98% and a reduction of about 50 tons of CO2 per year.
Takeaway
The Malee case shows that coating existing split-type air conditioners can cut energy use by more than a fifth and save over 445,000 THB a year without replacing equipment, paying for itself in under a year on units that have been running for 10 years.
