Background
Air conditioning and chiller systems are among the largest electricity users on an industrial site. Over time, condenser coils lose heat transfer efficiency, which forces compressors to work harder and increases energy consumption. At Aisin Chemical, this part of the cooling load is carried by two Daikin air-cooled chillers, each with a capacity of 91 tons, which have been in service for 9 years.
The solution: THERMAL-XR®
THERMAL-XR® is a graphene-enhanced coating from Graphene Manufacturing Group (GMG), designed to deliver superior heat transfer and protection for heat exchanger coils. The coating was spray-applied to the condenser coils of both air-cooled chillers, with no change to the equipment itself.
Results
Energy use was compared before and after coating:
- Electricity usage: 1,906 kWh/day before coating vs 1,573 kWh/day after
- Electricity cost: 243,492 THB/month before coating vs 200,905 THB/month after
- Carbon emissions: 278 tons CO2/year before coating vs 229 tons CO2/year after
- Annual saving: 511,040 THB per year
- ROI: < 1 year
These results equal an energy saving of 17.49% and a reduction of about 49 tons of CO2 per year.
Takeaway
This second Aisin Chemical case shows that results repeat across chillers on the same site: coating two more Daikin chillers cut energy use by 17.49% and saved over 511,000 THB a year, paying for itself in under a year.
