Background
Air conditioning and chiller systems are among the largest electricity users on an industrial site. Over time, condenser coils lose heat transfer efficiency, which forces compressors to work harder and increases energy consumption. At this SCGP site, the cooling load is carried by two Uni-Air air-cooled chillers, each with a capacity of 50 tons, which have been in service for 4 years.
The solution: THERMAL-XR®
THERMAL-XR® is a graphene-enhanced coating from Graphene Manufacturing Group (GMG), designed to deliver superior heat transfer and protection for heat exchanger coils. The coating was spray-applied to the condenser coils of both air-cooled chillers, with no change to the equipment itself.
Results
Energy use was compared before and after coating:
- Electricity usage: 1,799 kWh/day before coating vs 1,518 kWh/day after
- Electricity cost: 240,218 THB/month before coating vs 204,954 THB/month after
- Annual saving: 423,167 THB per year
- ROI: < 1 year
These results equal an energy saving of 14.68%.
Takeaway
This SCGP case shows that coating relatively new air-cooled chillers can still cut electricity costs by more than 420,000 THB a year, paying for itself in under a year on units that have been running for only 4 years.
