Background
Air conditioning and chiller systems are among the largest electricity users on an industrial site. Over time, condenser coils lose heat transfer efficiency, which forces compressors to work harder and increases energy consumption. At EKK, two Daikin split-type air conditioners, each with a capacity of 48,000 BTU, have been in service for 6 years.
The solution: THERMAL-XR®
THERMAL-XR® is a graphene-enhanced coating from Graphene Manufacturing Group (GMG), designed to deliver superior heat transfer and protection for heat exchanger coils. The coating was spray-applied to the condenser coils of both split-type air conditioners, with no change to the equipment itself.
Results
Energy use was compared before and after coating:
- Electricity usage: 185.72 kWh/day before coating vs 166 kWh/day after
- Electricity cost: 22,596 THB/month before coating vs 20,185 THB/month after
- Carbon emissions: 30 tons CO2/year before coating vs 27 tons CO2/year after
- Annual saving: 28,932 THB per year
- ROI: < 3 years
These results equal an energy saving of 10.67%.
Takeaway
The EKK case shows that coating existing split-type air conditioners can lower energy consumption and electricity costs without replacing equipment, even on relatively young units that have been running for 6 years.
