THERMAL-XR® CASE STUDY | Thailand, Lerdsin Hospital (Ministry of Public Health), 17.45% Energy Reduction

GMG release
Sandy Mohammad

Lerdsin Hospital, part of the Department of Medical Services under Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health (MOPH), applied THERMAL-XR® graphene coating to two split-type air conditioners and measured a 17.45% reduction in energy use, translating to an estimated saving of 9,260 THB per year and a return on investment of under 2 years.

Background

Air conditioning is one of the largest electricity users in a hospital, where cooling runs around the clock to keep patients and staff comfortable. Over time, condenser coils lose heat transfer efficiency, which forces compressors to work harder and increases energy consumption. At Lerdsin Hospital, two Uni-Air split-type air conditioners, each with a capacity of 24,000 BTU, have been in service for 5 years.

The solution: THERMAL-XR®

THERMAL-XR® is a graphene-enhanced coating from Graphene Manufacturing Group (GMG), designed to deliver superior heat transfer and protection for heat exchanger coils. The coating was spray-applied to the coils of both split-type air conditioners, with no change to the equipment itself.

Results

Energy use was compared before and after coating:

  • Electricity usage: 32.31 kWh/day before coating vs 26.67 kWh/day after
  • Electricity cost: 4,422 THB/month before coating vs 3,651 THB/month after
  • Carbon emissions: 5 tons CO2/year before coating vs 4 tons CO2/year after
  • Annual saving: 9,260 THB per year
  • ROI: < 2 years

These results equal an energy saving of 17.45%.

Takeaway

The Lerdsin Hospital case shows that coating existing split-type air conditioners can lower energy consumption and electricity costs in healthcare facilities without replacing equipment, even on relatively young units that have been running for 5 years.
