Background
Air conditioning and chiller systems are among the largest electricity users on an industrial site. Over time, condenser coils lose heat transfer efficiency, which forces compressors to work harder and increases energy consumption. At Nissin Foods, the cooling load is carried by four York air-cooled chillers, each with a capacity of 150 tons of refrigeration (TR), and they have been in service for 12 years.
The solution: THERMAL-XR®
THERMAL-XR® is a graphene-enhanced coating from Graphene Manufacturing Group (GMG), designed to deliver superior heat transfer and protection for heat exchanger coils. The coating was spray-applied to the condenser coils of all four air-cooled chillers, with no change to the equipment itself.
Results
Energy use was compared before and after coating:
- Electricity usage: 7,707 kWh/day before coating vs 6,839 kWh/day after
- Electricity cost: 971,038 THB/month before coating vs 861,699 THB/month after
- Carbon emissions: 1,255 tons CO2/year before coating vs 1,113 tons CO2/year after
- Annual saving: 1,312,066 THB per year
- ROI: < 2 years
These results equal an energy saving of 11.26%, and a reduction of about 142 tons of CO2 per year.
Takeaway
The Nissin Foods case shows that coating existing air-cooled chillers can deliver savings of more than 1.3 million THB a year at a large food manufacturing site without replacing equipment, even on units that have been running for 12 years.
