Background
Air conditioning is one of the largest electricity users in a hospital, where cooling runs around the clock to keep patients and staff comfortable. Over time, condenser coils lose heat transfer efficiency, which forces compressors to work harder and increases energy consumption. At Sikarin Hospital, three EK Euroklimat air-cooled chillers, each with a capacity of 8 tons, have been in service for 2 years.
The solution: THERMAL-XR®
THERMAL-XR® is a graphene-enhanced coating from Graphene Manufacturing Group (GMG), designed to deliver superior heat transfer and protection for heat exchanger coils. The coating was spray-applied to the condenser coils of all three chillers, with no change to the equipment itself.
Results
Energy use was compared before and after coating:
- Electricity usage: 312 kWh/day before coating vs 215 kWh/day after
- Electricity cost: 32,740 THB/month before coating vs 22,591 THB/month after
- Carbon emissions: 51 tons CO2/year before coating vs 35 tons CO2/year after
- Cooling efficiency: 1.160 kW/ton before coating vs 0.800 kW/ton after
- Annual saving: 121,792 THB per year

These results equal an energy saving of 31.00%, with the chillers using about 31% less power for every ton of cooling they deliver.
Takeaway
The Sikarin Hospital case shows that THERMAL-XR® is not only for ageing equipment. Even on chillers just 2 years old, the coating cut energy use by almost a third and paid for itself in under a year.
